What to do with all the Pumpkins?

No fall without pumpkins! This vegetable introduces its season like no other. As soon as pumpkins are ripe (you can recognize a ripe pumpkin by its hollow sound when knocking on it ) I know fall has definitely arrived. Fall without pumpkins is like Christmas without Christmas trees. But, did you know that pumpkins used to be a poor man’s food and were used to feed animals? Luckily it’s status has rised over time, because pumpkins not only taste delicious, they are well packed with a number of precious nourtrients such as potassium, calcium, zinc and vitamins A, C, D and E.

The diversity in species is incredibly rich, there are over 800 different types of pumpkins, some of them are edible some are decorative gourds.

Below I share my favorite two ways to cook and bake them.

As you can see on this picture, they also make perfect pouffs for your living room, as my daughter discovered when she was a baby.

When it comes to recipes I love keeping it simple because most often I don’t have a lot of time to spend hours in the kitchen. These two pumpkin ideas might not look like much, but they are absolutely delicious and very fast to make, so rather belonging to the category “healthy fast food”.

For oven baked pumpkins I prefer the little orange Hokkaido, which you can see on the picture above. Simply cut into pieces, leave the hard skin on ( it will soften when baked) sprinkle with some olive oil, herbs de provence and sea salt and backe it for about 30 minutes. Accompanied by a big green salad with apples, figs, grapes, avocados and nuts… et voilà, you have a perfect fall plate in no time.

But no fall without a pumkin soup. My favorite type for soups is the butternut. This long, pearshaped friend has just a few seeds and therefore offers a lot more pulp than its other colleagues. It has a slight buttery aroma and provides a rich, creamy consistency when cooked and blended.

The following recipe is so fast and simple, you need no more than 15 minutes.

 

BUTTERNUT PUMPKIN SOUP

     INGREDIENTS:

     ♥ 1 butternut pumpkin, chopped and skin removed

     ♥ 1 tsp. coconut oil

     ♥ fresh ginger, diced

     ♥ 1/2 onion, diced

     ♥ 1-2 clove of garlic diced

     ♥ 3-4 cups of water

     ♥ coconut milk

     ♥ staranis

     ♥ salt, pepper and nutmeg to taste (lime juice optional)

     DIRECTIONS: 

     1. Place coconut oil in a large pot and sauté onion, garlic and ginger

     2. Add chopped pumpkin and staranis and cover with water

     3. Bring to boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minute

     4. Blend until smooth

     5. Add coconut milk, salt, pepper and nutmeg and serve.  

The pumpkin brings the sweetness, the coconut milk the creaminess and if you like it a little more fresh, add a dash of lime juice at the end.

Another little extra I discovered recently is to add a piece of fresh rosemarry on top. It serves beautifully for decorative purposes but at the same time it’s aroma will give an extra experience for your tastebudds, blending in perfectly with the earthy taste of the pumpkin.

Discover the amazing health benefits of watermelon

I loooove watermelons. Now that they are in season I try to drink it’s juice almost every morning. It is so refreshing and hydrating, since watermelon is over 90% water. I like to blend it with fresh mint and some lime juice, for a perfect clean drink for hot summer days. Besides being super delicious and sweet like candy, watermelon has so many health benefits, that it would be a pity not to drink or eat from this beauty. I gathered a short list of the most known benefits, bt if you browse the net, you can find endless resources and information. 

How watermelon can add to your health and well-being

  • Immune Support: watermelon is loaded with electrolytes and vitamin C which both support the stability of your immune system; and it helps decrease the risk of certain cancers.
  • Watermelon is rich in lycopene, which is known for preventing plaque build up in blood vessels.
  • Anti-inflammatory & Antioxidant support: it feeds and nourishes the skin, preventing wrinkles and keeping the skin younger.
  • Wound healing & prevents cell damage
  • Watermelon protects the skin from sunburn (reduces risk of sunburn by 40%)                        
  • Promotes weight loss: remember watermelon is over 90 % water
  • Watermelon is an excellent diuretic and is extremely beneficial to the kidneys.
  • Watermelon helps your cardiovascular & bone health
  • Muscle & nerve support
  • Watermelon is alkaline-forming
  • Watermelon improves eye health
  • Watermelon is also known as ‘Natures Viagra’. The arginine produced by eating watermelon relaxes the blood vessels, which is the same basic concept of how Viagra works. The rind of the watermelon contains zinc, which also works to fight impotency.

You can either blend your watermelon or juice it, including some of the rind. The rind is full of many of the beneficial nutrients detailed above so it’s worth including in juicing. You won’t taste it in your watermelon juice since the red, fruity center is so sweet. If you want to juice it and add the rind, make sure you buy an organic watermelon.

For juicing start to wash and scrub the outside of the watermelon you want to use for juicing with a scrubbing brush and some apple cider vinegar to remove waxes and sprays. Cut off a big piece of the watermelon, depending how much you juice you want to make, and chop it up into strips that fit your juicer, including the green skin and rind. Then simply juice everything. Voilà!

If you want to blend it, simply add the red center to your belnder and blend together with some fresh mint leaves and lime juice. Sometimes I combine it with cucumber for a super hydrating combo. On hot summer days I like to add lots ice cubes at the end.

For best taste and the most health benefits drink your watermelon juice immediately.

Inspired by Green and how this color benefits you.

On January 1st we celebrated our daughter’s 5 th birtday. One of the gifts she got from her godfather was a package of cress seads. In different cultures it is a tradition to grow cress for the new year, as a symbolic act to celebrate new beginnings. I thought it is a wonderful ritual to do with the whole family, one that I would like to repeat every year. To plant the seeds for new dreams and watch them grow! Children love to watch the growing process, how the seeds grow into sprouts, and in the end we can even eat them. We put a little Mikey Mouse figure in the middle of the plate, Mikey Mouse’ s trees grew more and more until one day he dispeared in the jungle.

Watching the seeds grow reminded me of the time it takes for our dreams to grow. With every desire you have, you are already given the seed to create its manifestation. Whatever you want to create, is already within you, and it’s only a matter of time, patience, trust and believe until you bring it into form and reality. It takes time! It takes the time for the seed to mature. It takes time for the sprout to grow into a certain direction. It takes time to have the experince of growing itself. So often we get dicouraged when things don’t happen the way we wished for, but we forget that this is just part of the growing process. In these moments we need to remember that we are still in the process of growing that dream. Don’t put a deadline on your dreams, instead trust that it’s going to happen when the sprout has grown enough. In the meantime you need to water it and nurture it, so it can continue to grow. In other words, keep vizualising your desire and pretend it already happened until it’s real. Meditate on what you want to manifest as often as possible. Write it into your journal, create a vison board, create a collage of images associated with your desires and hang it up somewhere where you can see it all the time. That way you are reprogramming your subconscious mind. I love to create folders on Pinterest to connect with my desires. You can follow my Pinterst boards here.

The green sprouds also inspired me to talk a little about the COLOR GREEN, it’s meaning  and how this color benefits you. As always I am trying to capture the theme through images of the little things and moments in my life. I felt a true boost of energy from including more green in my life during these grey winter days.

MEANING OF THE COLOR GREEN:

The color green stands for the color of balance, harmony, hope, vitality, healing, stability, growth, spring, renewal and nature. It helps to renew and restore depleted energy. If we look at it from a color psychology perspective, it is the great balancer of the heart and the emotions. It creates equilibrium between the head and the heart.

Green is connected to the Heart Chakra. Chakras are energy centers and vortexes throughout our body. They manage the flow of our energy for different aspects of our life, such as our emotional life, physical health, relationship dynamics, career and success, creative flow, spiritual connection, and our overall sense of wellbeing.

THE HEART CHAKRA

The Heart Chakra which is located in the center of our chest holds the energetics and frequency of love. If the Heart Chakra is open and healthy it provides the ability to give, share and receive love, to nurture ourselves and others unconditionally. The heart Chakra loves to contribute to society. If I would describe the heart Chakra as a person it would be a charity worker, a good parent, a helpful neighbor, or a good host. It is generous and loves to share. The heart Chakra is associated with the color green, the Heart Chakra and Nature/Mother Earth are clearly connected. For the body’s ecosystem it ‘s the lungs, the breath, the respiratory system that provides circulation within our body, it renews and restores depleted energy and brings nourishment, movement, regeneration and supports the blood to be strong, healthy and flowing. The lungs of mother Earth are the trees, the jungle, the rainforest and its veins are the river streams. It is the sanctuary far off from the stresses of modern living, restoring us back to a sense of well being. This Chakra also relates to prosperity and abundance, finance and material wealth. The Heart Chakra is the home-base of our spirit, because it feels home in the high frequency of love. To heal or maintain the health of the Heart Chakra it is crucial to find and do the things we love and spend as much time with these things as possible. Things that open our heart, so that gradually our whole life and every aspect in our life is an expression of love.

ACTIVITIES THAT SUPPORT THE HEALTH OF YOUR HEART CHAKRA:

Spending time in nature, loving, expressing gratitude, giving, volunteering, abundantly receiving, nurturing, caring for another, caring for yourself, intimacy, romance. Include as much greens as possible in your diet. Indulge in green smoothies and green juices made from fresh, raw fruits and green leafy vegatables. The greens help you alkalize your body and and are packed full of nutrients.

HOW THE COLOR GREEN BENEFITS YOU:

Wearing, meditating on, or surrounding yourself with this color opens the heart, connects you to your true nature and rejuvenates the spirit. It helps you relax, feel peaceful and creates a sense of stability, healing and expansion.

Morning Rituals and your Sacred Space

I am sending you today’s blogpost from our summer holidays on the beautiful island of Ibiza, Spain. Last summer I fell in love with this island and this year my heart was longing to come back. I am enjoying every moment here with my family, that’s why today’s post arrives a little later than usual. Here is a picture taken from my balcony as I am writing you this; not a bad place to work from!

I will share more about our magical time here in next week’s blog. Today, I will talk about some of my favorite morning rituals and the importance of cultivating sacred space and time for yourself every day. Last week I have been posting them on Instagram for a couple of days. I am pretty much infatuated with Instagram lately. It’s become like a daily visual blog for me, where I am able to document and share a more personal glimpse into our life, without using much words. You can follow me here for a peek into our daily musings, adventures and happenings.

MY FAVORITE MORNING RITUAL

My Nr. 1 secret for staying centered, focused, thriving and happy has always been to carve out some sacred time for myself, and spend time with myself first thing in the morning. I’ve been cultivating a habit of prioritizing myself everyday (or as often as I can) before anyone else gets my attention. That way, ultimately,  everyone else around me benefits. I am more relaxed as a mother, wife, teacher and mentor.  I don’t get irritated so quickly, I am more patient, I have a more positive outlook on life and I have much more energy to give and share, because I have recharged my batteries. Especially with children and our busy lifes it’s just too easy to loose ourselves and our balance.  In this phase of my life I find it even more crucial to gift myself day by day with little moments in order to ground and connect with my body and soul.  For that reason I get up early every morning,  at least 30 Minutes before everyone else gets up in my family. Often it’s not easy, taking those extra 15 minutes of extra sleep feel so tempting, but I know I will be a better version of myself if I allow myself to have this sacred time.

 

GOOD MORNING RITUAL # 1 LEMON WATER

I always start the day with fresh lemon water. It cleanses the whole system, and helps to flush out all the toxins. It gives a nice boost to your immune system because of it’s rich Vitamin C content, helps with digestion and supports clear skin! You will feel refreshed and hydrated right away. The benefits of lemon water are endless and it’s one of the most beneficial and at the same time simple changes you can make for your health. Your body will thank you.
Press one organic lemon, pur it into a big glass and fill it up with water. On colder days I like to add hot water. Enjoy!


GOOD MORNING RITUAL #2 MOVE & STRETCH YOUR BODY

No matter where you are, how you feel and what you do – make some time to move, stretch and connect with your body every day! Move in whatever way feels right for you. Put your favorite music on, stay in the moment, go with the flow, shake things out, move how it feels best, land in your body, center, ground, skip, twirl, wiggle, roll, balance, fall, reach, extend, glide, turn, twist, stretch, elevate, contract, receive, pull, push, sway, leap, jump, feel free, breath deeply,dance more- and worry less!

See if you can incorporate just 10-15 minutes of movement each day. I usually do my own combination of Yoga, Pilates, Ballet barre and free flow Dance improvisation. After just 30 minutes I feel refreshed, grounded, strong, happy in my body and ready to start the day. You can go here to find some more inspiration on how to move your body freely. In these videos I share some of my free flow Dance improvisations in all kinds of spaces. You can see that I try to dance everywhere. In one video for example I am even dancing and jumping in a tiny and very narrow hotel bathroom. This is just to remind you that you can do it too, wherever you are, you don’t need a fancy studio or class. And if you have kids, they will  love it too. I often dance with my children if I feel they need to release some energy.

 

GOOD MORNING RITUAL #3 MEDITATION

Meditate!  Make some time every day to connect with your soul, inner self, your truth, your spirit, your essence however you want to call it. Even 5 minutes a day can do magic. There are so many ways, techniques and practises out there how to meditate and I am not the expert, but what I found out for myself is that in whatever way you do it, the purpose is always the same: To connect with your inner divinity and be present in the moment.  To connect with and live life from the soul is the most important thing for a purposeful life. Because when you can live life from your soul’s perspective you’ll have your questions answered in 100% alignment with your truth. So that eventually every aspect of your life becomes an expression of your divine & authentic nature and you true purpose on earth.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               

Close your eyes and listen to the little voice within. You can ask a question and see what answers you receive. What words do you hear? What images come to mind? What sounds or smells do you sense? What is your heart longing for today? You could do it first thing in the morning while you are still lying in bed. I prefer to do it after I have moved and landed in my body. I feel that when I have released some energy that is blocking me, I can be more present with myself.  You can light a candle to make this moment even more sacred. Namaste!

 

GOOD MORNING RITUAL # 4 TEA TIME-SET YOUR DAILY INTENTION

Make yourself a nice cup of your favorite tea, take a deep breath, quiet your mind and drop into your heart space. Dream! What is your intention for today? Write it down and then think it into your tea. Drink it and feel how every cell gets nourished by your intention. That’s how we manifest our dreams!

 

GOOD MORNING RITUAL # 5 CONNECT WITH NATURE

Whether it’s walking barefoot on the grass, water my plants on the balcony or go for a walk or run in the forest, connecting with nature immediatley raises our vibration and recharges our batteries. I find it almost impossible to not feel ungrounded when you spend time in nature. Somehow, spending time in nature helps us to connect more with our own nature.

Voilà, I hope these rituals inspire you to start your days refreshed and balanced :-) !

A Mid-Summernight’s Dream

Yesterday was the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere and the first official day of summer! Hurray! A moment to celebrate!

Last week I shared with you a midyear ritual to connect with your dreams, to let go of the old and unwanted , to reflect on what you want to bring into your life and redefine your intentions for the next 6 months. A Mid-Summernight’s Dream

When you connect with a new dream and form this dream into an intention you plant the seed for that dream to grow. When you keep nurturing and watering the seed of your dream through vivid imaginations, vizualisations and inspired actions towards that dream, the desire will grow stronger. New opportunities will start to show up in your life, your life expands, until one day that dream becomes part of your real life. Just as with nature: if you care for and water the seeds you planted in spring, you will receive the fruitful rewards in summer and you will be able to harvest what you have grown.

Speaking of nature,  I am amazed by the beauty that is blooming and blossoming at this time of the year. As I am writing this post I am breathing in the scents of lavender, mint leaves and roses. Mmmmmhhhh! ….and  I am in awe of the tranquil beauty of the waterlillies in our little pond (these are, by the way, one of my favorite flowers).

Today I felt inspired to capture all this beauty through the lense of my camera.

I often get asked where I find inspiration for my art. Nature is definitely one of my favorite source of inspiration. I love to capture it’s beauty through photography to gather inspiration for my art. I am amazed by the many shapes, colors, patterns, symbols, arrangements, and choreographies that can be found when looking closely at the abundance of nature’s beauty.

I invite you to grab your camera and go for a beauty hunt some time this week. Go and explore nature’s eternal beauty …..in your neighborhood, garden, forest, parc, balcony, wherever you like to connect with nature.

Summer & Letting go

Summer has really arrived here in Switzerland! Eventhough I love all the 4 seasons, summer is really my favorite time of the year. My essence feels most alive in summer.I realized that we are nearly half way through the year. Incredible how time flies. Didn’t we just celebrate Christmas and New Years yesterday? Summer is also a perfect time for me to let go and just BE in the present moment. The hot and sunny weather pulls me out of the house to spend time in the sun and in nature. This allows me to let go of the “musts” and the “to do lists” for a day, for a few hours or a little moment.It is the prefect time to remember, review, honor, and revaluate the things that have happened in the past 6 months, let go of the things that don’t serve us anymore and then set new intentions for the next few months that lie ahead.I invite you to set aside a moment for yourself, grab your journal, make yourself a refreshing drink (you can try the recipe below), find a comfortable spot that lights you up and connect:

RETROSPECT: Reflect and review on all the things that you experienced in the last 6 months. Honor every moment good or bad. Appreciate what you have learnt and celebrate all the little achievements

EXPRESS GRADITUDE: Make a list of everything that you feel grateful for in your life. It will help you recognize the abundance that you have in your current life, and all the little things that we usually take for granted.

LET GO: Let go of all the things that don’t serve you anymore for your next level of evolution. Write them all down and then release them. Visualize how you put these things into balloons and then send them off to the sky. Or imagine how all the things you don’t want anymore hang on strings that are attatched to your body – in your minds eye see how you cut them off with big scissors.

CONNECT & SET NEW INTENTIONS: Think of all the things that you would like to attract and bring into your life. What are your dreams and desires for the next 6 months? Write down the smallest detail of your wildest dream, don’t think about the HOW it will happen. Then form a clear intention that expresses what you want to manifest in your life as if it has already happened. Write the intention down as often as possible over the next 6 months, ideally every day.

REMEMBER: Our thoughts have the power to create everything in our life. They can either help us create the life of our dreams or disconnect us entirely from our truth. The more we listen to our intuition, heart and soul and the more we let go of the negative self-talks and limiting stories – the more we can step out of our own way and move into a supportive and loving space from where we have the power to create miracles that eventually lead us towards our dreams and desires; step-by-step.In your wildest dreams, what does your best life look like?

 

Recipe of the week

This is a refreshing cooler for hot summer days
1) Squeeze one organic lemon or 2 limes
2) Pour juice intro a carafe
3) Add a handful of frozen berries of your choice
4) Add fresh mint and lemon balm leaves
5.) Fill up with pure water
6) Add ice cubes
7) If you prefer it sweet you can add some agave or honey
8)Let it sit for about 15 minutes
9)Enjoy!
